    Arthritis Management
People with arthritis often have stiff joints - largely because they are in pain and avoid movements that hurt.  By immobilizing arthritic joints, however, the stiffness and pain only get worse.  Our staff can help teach you how to do range of motion and strengthening exercises that will improve your function without increasing pain.

Preserving good range of motion is key to maintaining the ability to perform daily activities.  Therefore, increasing the range of motion of a joint is the primary focus of physical therapy.
Building strength in the involved muscles surrounding the joint also is extremely important, since stronger muscles can better stabilize a weakened joint.

We also provide mobilization therapies which include traction (gentle, steady pulling), massage, and manipulation (using the hands to restore normal movement to stiff joints).
When done by a trained professional, these methods can help control pain and increase joint motion and muscle and tendon flexibility.

" I had  tried Physical Therapy in the past and did not find it to be of much help.  After going to Finger Lakes Physical Therapy, I can say I am happy with the results.   I now live with less discomfort that I have had in years.  Thanks Kristie!

" When my doctor recommended Pulmonary Rehab, I wasn't sure if I wanted to go.  I need to use an oxygen tank, and  I didn't like the idea of going to an exercise class.  At my first visit, the therapist took the time to listen to me, then she told me about the class and what to expect.  Now that I'm used to it, I enjoy going, I feel better, and I can walk to my mailbox without getting out of breath!"

    Custom Foot Orthotics

A custom made foot orthotic is a device made to control the way the foot functions.

A properly prescribed and manufactured foot orthotic will  correct abnormalities in your biomechanical function (the way your body moves) thus reducing pain in your feet, hips, lower back, and knees.

You should strongly note that not all orthotics are made the same way.  An improperly designed orthotic can worsen your current symptoms and can create new ones!

"An orthotic is only as good as  the evaluations"

At FLPT, we will conduct very thorough "biomechanical evaluation" and take a number of detailed measurements.  These measurements are critical in design of your orthotic.  We will take  measurements in standing and in non weight bearing as well as photos of your feet in standing and a video of your gait cycle on a treadmill.  We will proceed to make a plaster mold of your feet before sending all of this information to the orthotic lab.

    Child & Adolescents Fitness Program

A recent report published by the International Journal of Pediatric Obesity indicated that nearly half of the children in North America will be overweight by 2010.  Being overweight and inactive compromises a person's health and longevity.

The U. S. Surgeon General recommends moderate physical activity for children every day for at least 60 minutes.  However, this can be a daunting task for a child who gets out of breath walking up a flight of stairs.

Finger Lakes Physical Therapy is here to help prevent overweight kids from becoming overweight adults.  The guidance and encouragement of a caring physical therapist who understands individual needs and possible limitations and is able to closely monitor progress can often mean the difference between success and failure.

We provide a fun, individualized program for each child to help them increase endurance, mobility, strength, and flexibility while encouraging a healthy lifestyle.

   Pulmonary Rehabilitation
For those diagnosed with a respiratory disease

Who Would Benefit?
Anyone with a breathing problem including:
  • Chronic bronchitis
  • Emphysema
  • Chronic asthma
  • "COPD"
Why Should I Consider Pulmonary Rehabilitation?
1. It can help you feel better
  • Less shortness of breath
  • More confidence
  • Less insomnia
  • Less anxiety
  • Increase knowledge about disease and its management
2. It can help you do more
  • Less fatigue with everyday tasks
  • Improved walking ability
  • Improved strength of arm, leg, and breathing muscles
3. Enables you to meet others with a similar diagnosis
  • It can be helpful to know that you are not alone
  • It is more comforting to exercise in the company of others with similar limitations.

    Balance & Falls Intervention
  • According to the CDC, more than one-third of adults ages 65 years and older fall each year.
  • Among older adults, falls are the leading cause of injury and deaths.
  • Falls are the most common cause of nonfatal injuries and hospital admissions for trauma.
  • In 2003 more than 1.8 million seniors age 65 and older were treated  in emergency departments for fall-related injuries and more than 421,000 were hospitalized.

Through careful scientific studies, researchers have identified a number of modifiable risk factors:
  • Lower body weakness.
  • Problems with walking and balance
  • Taking four or more medications or any psychoactive medications.

Finger Lakes Physical Therapy can help you or your loved one reduce the chance of falls by working together to increase lower body strength and improve balance.  We will provide a comprehensive evaluation of balance, strength, and function.  Then, an individualized program for each patient is designed to include gait training, neuromuscular re-education, and exercises for strength, flexibility, mobility, balance, and gaze stabilization.  A specially designed home exercise program along with education in fall prevention is provided for the patient and family members or caregiver.

    Lymphedema Management

The lymphatic system is a network of vessels that rid your body of excess fluid.  When the amount of fluid is too great or when your lymphatic system is damaged, you get lymphedema.

Lymphedema is a collection of protein rich fluid that can cause edema (swelling) in your extremities.

FLPT"s Lymphedema Program consists of:
  • Manual lymph drainage performed by our certified staff
  • Compression Bandaging
  • Proper Exercise Instruction
  • Education

Finger Lakes Physical Therapy
"Finger Lakes Physical Therapy has helped me many times in the past, and it was my first choice when it was time to rehabilitate my shoulder after surgery.  I was concerned that my shoulder wouldn't be as strong as it was before my rotator cuff tear, but I am pleased to say that I have returned to playing competitive squash.
Thanks Kristi!"
